How do you know you’re running the right trucks in your warehouse? Do you know that the trucks you select can not only affect your outright purchase price (have you purchased too many? Are they the correct type/specification?) but will also affect your productivity, downtime and overall running costs. There is a lot of talk of the new technology available (AC, RFID) that can increase productivity, but do you know which trucks incorporate this technology?

This seminar seeks to address these points, and provide an overview of the different types of trucks available, what their strengths and limitations are, what technology they use, and overall, how to best improve the productivity in your specific warehouse.

130: The Greening of the Supply Chain

Green supply chain analysis provides an opportunity to review processes, materials and operational concepts. As with continuous improvement programs, green supply chain analysis targets wasted material and under-utilized resources. A unique opportunity for retailers is to use the supply chain to reduce paper consumption and transportation costs. Paper manufacturing is the third largest consumer of fossil fuels worldwide and is also by far the largest component of landfill waste. Retailers are significant consumers of paper, primarily in the cardboard used to ship orders.

Supply chain algortithms by such as package cubing can result in significant reductions in cardboard consumption by packing orders more efficiently. Optimizing inventory and distribution among multiple distribution centers also creates significant reductions in transportation emissions. Customer orders can be matched to closest fulfillment location through the use of smart routing, reducing greenhouse gases from highway and air freight.

125: Fleet Management Strategies for Mobile Equipment

In today's highly competitive marketplace, companies are actively pursuing every available means of reducing costs and eliminating non-core functions. When it comes to the purchase and use of material handling equipment, most focus their efforts on the reduction of acquisition cost yet overlook the much greater long-term costs associated with the day-to-day operation and maintenance of their material handling fleet. Fleet management addresses both of these issues and works with the client to develop processes and behaviors. Best practices control costs, improve operational efficiencies, reduce downtime allowing the client to focus on their core competency. Let the fleet manager do the heavy lifting.

106: Adaptability of the Global Supply Chain

Adaptability is the capacity of a supply chain to handle gradually increasing or decreasing volumes, to be effective with surges in volume requirements, to be able to address disruptions in the supply chain and to handle changes in the economics of the supply chain. Supply chain systems, processes, people, facilities, equipment, networks and partners must all be adaptable if the supply chain is to be effective over time. The realities of today’s global supply chain are:

Complex global operations with rapidly changing demand patterns

Increasing need of visibility and synchronization between supply chain elements

Rapid deployment of technology

Organizational change and redefinement of traditional roles

Growth of partnerships

Outsourcing supply chain functions

Increasing fuel and transportation costs

Increasing need for contingency planning

Enhanced sourcing decisions that drive changes in transportation routes

The future success of most companies lies within their ability to create an adaptable supply chain that will allow them to leverage market changes and capture new business seamlessly and profitably.

112: Look No Hands! Hands-Free Data Collection Technologies Boost Accuracy and Velocity in the Supply Chain

Mobile computing and data-capture technologies have revolutionized materials handling processes in the supply chain. Bar codes, RFID and wireless communications have brought accuracy and velocity to a whole host of logistics processes. Leading companies are extracting even higher payback from these technologies by using equipment in more efficient ways. "Hands-free" is proving to be the way to go.

Operators need both hands constantly available to handle materials: the work they are being paid to do. Hands-free technologies eliminate the need to hold - and drop or misplace - wireless data collection devices. Technologies currently in use include wearable computers, wearable scanners and speech recognition.

122: What if You Implemented a New Approach in your Retail Distribution Facility?

The retail marketplace is undergoing significant and fundamental change. Sales channels are becoming more complex as internet sales increase. Customer demand for choice and service continue to grow. Globalization in both supply chain management and competition creates new pressures to improve competitiveness.

While these trends impact every facet of a retail distribution operation, it is not an overstatement to suggest that the most significantly impacted area in a distribution center is in the order fulfillment process. Studies show that over 60% of the labor in a DC is involved in the order picking process, and over 75% is involved in the pick/pack/ship process. This is where productivity gains must be achieved.

So if you are faced with these challenges, shouldn’t you investigate the options available to you? This presentation will present technology and strategy options that address your challenges to improve order fulfillment productivity and accuracy. We will cover established and emerging technologies to automate order picking, improve order consolidation operations, and streamline value added service operations. We will also demonstrate how these technologies have been deployed successfully by a number of America’s leading retail distribution operations. And finally, we will answer the question, “What If?”

Keynote: Building the Workforce of The Future

Even if you have never used the term "disruptive demographics" you will soon be living it. The world’s labor force is changing. Baby Boomers are beginning to retire, setting the stage for major shifts in workplace demographics including a declining working population through 2025. Skill sets are rapidly changing. Work/Life balance is taking on new meaning. And there is often a huge disconnect between people already in the workforce and those just entering it. That is disruptive demographics. Will the next generation be ready to step into their roles? How will these roles change? The implications for manufacturing and the supply chain are far-reaching. Get an in-depth look at these changes and how companies like yours can prepare for them.

The ProMat Keynote will consist of a panel of experts at the forefront of this important issue and moderated by renowned business journalist Forrest Sawyer. They will provide real-world perspective, detail how they are adapting to the changing workforce and offer practical ideas that will help you adapt to this change as you build your workforce of the future.

223: Staying in the Black as Labor Fades to Gray

In the next seven years, the percentage of individuals over age 62 will rise from 19% of the workforce to more than 22% as the baby boomer generation reaches retirement age. Nationwide, the percentage of men and women actively working drops sharply after age 62, leveling off to 15% of men and 10% of woment by age 65. This means a sizeable percentage of today's workforce will be aging out of the labor market. For warehouse and transportation companies, this graying of the workforce is particularly troubling. Distribution employees already rank among the oldest workers in the U.S., with 26.4% of the distribution workforce estimated to be between 45 and 55 years old.

With a shrinking and more diverse workforce, employers need more sophisticated tools and a variety of approaches to manage their labor needs. Programs that make managing these variables easier have moved into the mainstream of the distribution industry because they enable companies to do more work with fewer people. According to AMR Research, labor management systems (LMS) typically raise productivity 20% or more for warehouse operations. An aging-and shrinking-workforce increases the need for such programs as companies struggle to maintain or improve their productivity despite fewer workers.

Winzer provides fasteners and Maintenance-Repair-Overhaul (MRO) supplies nationwide. Their business model is sales through a franchise. In a mature business, they experienced consistent double digit growth. The single Dallas distribution center with conventional shelving became a constraint on growth. After study of the alternatives, Winzer modified the material handling systems, replacing conventional shelving with scalable AS/RS, Pick to Lights and RF picking with a Put-to-Light order consolidation system. They further shortened the order fulfillment cycle by their franchisee’s using sophisticated pen-pads to take orders and manage accounts.

The results over five years include next day delivery to a growing national franchise network at 99% fill rate, from an inventory of 57,000 SKUs. Operators pick more per unit of time with paperless, priority-based picking solutions. In the past few years, Winzer also added Eastern and Western DC’s.

321: What if You Changed your Split Case Order Picking Systems?

In recent years, changing market conditions have required many companies to offer split case distribution to their customers, dramatically changing and increasing the complexity of order fulfillment operations. This increasing demand for “eaches”, packages or inner-packs from split cases requires different solutions to achieve the low cost and competitive piece-picking rate required by today’s marketplace.

Broken case picking systems range from the traditional storage rack order picking activity to flow rack, carousel systems, pick to light systems, and voice systems. The system solution that a company elects for their business can affect labor costs, picking accuracy, picking rates, floor space requirements, and return on investment.

The question than many companies struggle with is, “What if we changed our strategies for Split Case Order Picking?” Well, there are numerous steps that should be undertaken to begin the process of evaluating different alternatives. This presentation will look at the criteria used to evaluate various order picking solutions. Also, we will address the various solutions that may be applied, based on the data analysis. Once the potential solutions are evaluated, we will review several applications that were applied in a number of leading distribution companies.

Last year more than 2 million used load wheels were sent to landfills across the U.S. In most cases these wheels could have been stripped and remolded with new polyurethane. Remolding is an old idea that's breathing new life into the material handling industry. It is a giant step in the right direction and an important way green conscious companies can work to lower their resource impact and satisfy ISO 14001 requirements. Recyling used wheels diminiishes the burden on landfills and, more significantly, cuts atmospheric pollutants emitted by foundaries while producing the cast iron cores for new wheels. Remolding also reduces water table contamination from bearing grease and can help companies lower their annual maintenance expenses.

326: Automated Print Production for 21st Century

Cox Target Media uses lean manufacturing principles in its new Valpak Manufacturing Center to produce and direct-mail more than 500 million neighborhood-targeted advertising envelopes annually. The company's consistent growth was “hitting the wall” in 2 maxed-out unscalable plants that used a batch process and at least 12 manual handlings of each mailing. Cox identified and evaluated the latest technologies and formed a cross-functional team to plan and justify the project. Transition goals included protecting current business, minimizing impact on employees and gaining acceptance of the new processes.
The solution changed production from a week-long “Push” batch to a few-hour “Pull” process for each targeted neighborhood. AS/RS buffers are used for press runs, manufacturing materials, and USPS mail trays. AGVs transport print-roll WIP and pallets of robotically palletized finished goods. There is no manual handling of mailers. The new facility is “wrapped” around the manufacturing process and equipment. Project realization was achieved on schedule with a team of 30 manufacturers and technical partners. This session will show how Cox Target Media:

Assessed their situation, planned and implemented a best-in-world automated print manufacturing and shipping center for 10-20 years growth

Set up and managed the integration of products and services provided by core team of 30 company employees

Evaluated lessons learned, in a “Do” and “Not Do Again” format

For those that have pioneered their way into the visibility space, it's often been even more difficult to determine how best to leverage the gained insights into their supply chain to drive more efficiency and optimization into their operations.
This session will focus on clarifying these and other key questions regarding visibility. We'll also discuss some of the barriers to complete visibility organizations face that in some cases have sabotaged efforts and cost enterprises millions of wasted dollars.

322: RFID-Based Resource Management of Powered Industrial Trucks: Safety Technology that Delivers Real Return on Investment

RFID-based wireless technology for managing fleets of powered industrial trucks (typically forklifts, tow tractors and other material handling equipment) establishes total visibility of and accountability for both the vehicles and the people who operate them. The technology improves the workplace safety (and security) and automates compliance with OSHA regulations through vehicle access control, electronic safety inspection checklists, digital impact sensing, real-time visibility and remote management of vehicles. In addition, the technology can reveal opportunities for capital and operating cost reductions, with automated tools for measuring and boosting productivity, managing assets and streamlining vehicle maintenance. RFID-based industrial truck management systems generally consist of intelligent wireless devices installed on the vehicles. Wireless communication modes for connecting the vehicle-mounted devices to the local area network and software from variouls levels of management to control and utilize the system from anywhere on the network are also included.

342: Advanced Planning for Distribution Centers

Avoid costly mistakes by considering key issues now! Learn how to overcome the obstacles and unique issues involved in planning and design of distribution centers. Advanced planning and programming are key to building a facility that enables the most efficient operations. Some of the key decisions to be considered include operations design, building design, delivery method and site selection. With careful strategic planning, a new distribution center can improve logistics efficiency and in the long run, boost a company's bottom line. With many options in site selection, building size and form and the type of automation to be employed, many parameters must be established before the first shovelful of dirt is turned. Some of these decisions depend upon the size, weight and type of product being handled. One must consider, too, the volume of pallets and products being received and shipped, time requirements for delivery, fuel costs and modes of transportation, customers' needs, project budget and schedule. In this seminar, experts will discuss proven and successfully implemented solutions for a variety of challenges such as multi-level picking, fire protection, egress, refrigeration and flexibility for future demands. Although the majority of this discussion is focused on new facilities, much of the information is applicable to facility expansion and renovations.
